Four spaces. One vision.
The reimagined Harvey Milk Plaza will offer four connected spaces, each reflecting a part of Harvey Milk’s legacy and the movement he helped ignite.
The Gallery
Located on the concourse level of Castro Muni Station, the Gallery is an immersive cultural space where the stories behind the movement are told, at the place where so much of it happened. It is what gives the Plaza its voice — and the only element of the renovation that remains unfunded.
The Pedestal
Located at the historic intersection of Castro and Market Streets, the Pedestal highlights the history of collective action that has occurred here. It provides a focal point for large gatherings and represents Harvey’s idea that each of us plays a role in the movement — that leadership arises from community, and that anyone can stand up and lead the way toward greater social justice.
The Beacon
The Beacon is a symbol of the dynamic, beating heart of the community — a recruitment center, a news feed, and an ode to Harvey and our history, all in one. This monument tells the story not only of Harvey Milk, but of the Castro’s legacy of LGBTQ+ energy, and of the victories and ongoing struggles of the movement. The panels of various shapes and sizes — some of which are digital display panels — reference the signs seen at many gatherings, both yesterday and today.
The Grove
The Grove is a quiet, contemplative place evoking hope — the part of the Harvey Milk story that resonates with many people. Here, visitors will find a landscape with eleven trees to symbolize the eleven months Harvey served in office before his assassination. The intimately scaled park setting will invite visitors to reconnect with the feeling of hope that each of us carries within ourselves.
